About good practice
A description of the location
Village Garden in Smlednik is a sustainable community project that revives the local tradition of flanking, it was designed as part of Flancanja on May 12, 2018, which is a cultural festival of exchanging seedlings
The reason for the emergence of good practice
In 2018, the village of Smlednik, Slovenia, celebrated the 900th anniversary of its first mention. On this occasion, the locals wanted to build and maintain a community garden. The idea sprouted in 2016 thanks to the local Oral History Society. The main functions of the garden are social and educational: it is a public space where locals can meet and exchange growing plants. But it is also about and for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the village and its indigenous plants. The project is not only aimed at locals, an annual seedling exchange festival is also organized next to the garden, where visitors from all over the world benefit from it.
The operation of best practice
The garden is located in the well-kept historical center of the village, on a plot of land (100m2) near the church of St. Urha, which was given for free use by Smlednik. 100 different types of plants grow in the garden, most of them medicinal. The garden serves as a permanent place for socializing and education. It is constantly maintained on a voluntary basis by a group of interested locals in coordination with the SCUZ society. Every year it is included in the Flancanje event, and this year it is also a place for smaller events on the theme of reviving cultural heritage and educational events
