ACTING TOGETHER
How do we co-create public space in remote places?

Small and remote places are characterized by low population, poor transport connections, difficult accessibility and geographical barriers. Nevertheless, they offer a quality of living that in many ways exceeds that of cities. In these places, a community spirit can develop, where people support and cooperate with each other.

THE “ACTING TOGETHER” PLATFORM ESTABLISHES A CATALOG OF GOOD PRACTICES IN THE FIELD OF PARTICIPATION IN PUBLIC SPACE IN REMOTE PLACES. YOU ARE INVITED TO PRESENT YOUR GOOD PRACTICES TOO!

Co-creation within public spaces in small and remote places

Public spaces play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life in small and remote areas, facilitating encounters, socializing and exchanges while co-creating the identity of a place. Social events, artistic practices, cultural reflections and traditions unfold in public spaces, shaping relationships among both residents and visitors.

Preserving and developing public spaces in small and remote places is essential for ensuring the quality of life. Public spaces contribute to making these places attractive for living and encourage users to engage in mutual interactions.

Arnstein scale of participation

Co-creation through collaboration among various stakeholders (residents, professional and interest associations, local authorities, and other stakeholders) can significantly contribute to making public spaces vibrant community hubs that nurture local identity, encourage collaboration among residents and visitors, and maintain the attractiveness of small and remote places.

In addition to appropriate physical arrangements, a crucial component of quality public spaces is the activities that take place within them. These activities can include cultural events, goods exchanges, creative workshops, social gatherings, recreation, games, entertainment and other activities that promote human connection, express local culture and contribute to improved psychophysical well-being.

WHAT?

As part of the international project Smoties, the ACTING TOGETHER PLATFORM has been established as a public online portal for recognizing, promoting and supporting best practices in the field of participatory revitalization of public spaces in small and remote areas. It focuses on existing spatial arrangements or activities that are the result of collaboration and connection among local residents and other stakeholders. The platform encourages collaboration and participatory public space provision in cooperation with the local community.

HOW?

In the "SUBMIT GOOD PRACTICE" tab, enter basic information about a successful case of co-creating public space in a small or remote place. Also, upload visual material that best represents your practice and provide links to various online content where the good practice is detailed. Don't forget to check the "CATALOG OF GOOD PRACTICES" tab, which can serve as an inspiration and a source of ideas for co-creating quality public spaces in small and remote areas.

WHY?

In numerous small and remote places, there are excellent examples of co-creating shared spaces. Due to their inherently less visible nature, this practice is less known, minimally researched, inadequately promoted and, most importantly, rarely recognized and supported for operation and development within its local environments. The ACTING TOGETHER PLATFORM is established to promote and better understand these practices, and in 2024, support the most promising ones in their future operation and development.

The SMOTIES project takes place within the framework of the EU-Creative Europe Programme in the partnership Human Cities. The latter was established in 2006 as a platform for interdisciplinary exchanges in the field of participatory revitalization of public spaces. Smoties develops new approaches to the co-creation of public space in remote and small places. In doing so, it emphasizes the participation of the local community as the main guide.
